UNVEILING NARRATIVES: INDIAN AND PAKISTANI MEDIA FRAMING OF ARTICLE 370 REVOCATION

Published 2024-06-20

Abstract

The annulment of Article 370 on August 5, 2019, by the Government of India marked a significant shift in the political landscape of Jammu and Kashmir. This move, accompanied by restructuring the region into two union territories, was met with varied reactions both domestically and internationally. This study conducts a comparative framing analysis of Indian and Pakistani media narratives surrounding the revocation of Article 370. This research explores the media's divergent framing, rhetoric, and implications by reviewing news articles, opinion pieces, and editorials from prominent media outlets in both countries. While some Indian media outlets portrayed the revocation as a step towards integration and development, others viewed it as a threat to Kashmiri autonomy. On the other hand, Pakistani media often framed the abrogation of Article 370 as a violation of Kashmiri rights and a potential threat to Indo-Pak relations. This study aims to shed light on how the media in both countries represent this contentious issue and its implications for Indo-Pak relations.
